This is a good book for beginners. It throws you right into learning the language. It's more like a workbook, where you learn phrases and more while also doing fill in the blank. I would prefer a more step-by-step approach, meaning they start off with the alphabet, numbers, characters, etc, yet this book is the opposite approach. It immerses you right away. A DVD with mp3s is included. I haven't been able to get the DVD to work on Windows 10 yet, but I will try more options to make it work. Check this out if you're new to the language.

At first, I couldn't find a link to the downloadable Mp3 content.Here's the link:http://www.tuttlepublishing.com/tagalog-for-beginners-downloadable-cd-contentI've found a few errors in this book early on but this is the best book I've found so far to learn Tagalog. My wife is Filipino so she's helping me learn.

This is a beginners book...but it starts the student in learning conversations instead of simple words and building up to sentences or thoughts. The CD that come with the book was somewhat helpful, again it immerses the reader in conversation instead of basic words to form sentences. But it was helpful in my needs. I think there should be a book designed for those not ready to have conversations but to learn words then simple sentences.

Book does a very poor job at explaining the structure of the language. Multiple typos throughout, shows clear lack of editing. Expects you to infer grammar rules and syntax immediately without more than one example. Layout of lessons are also messy. Overall terrible and not for beginners.

Ignoring the fact that they forgot to include Appendix 3 and 4 totally (though listing it in the TOC), I find the style not to my liking. Though it suggests that after finishing a chapter that you now know how to use possessive pronuns, in truth you can (at most) say one or two cardboard phrases with little understanding about 'why' you are saying it that way (or understanding any other way of expressing the same).

The cd lost me about the 5th page, it started speaking about something else there but i couldnt find it. So CD wasnt really good, but goi g through the book alone and googling the pronunciation of the words, help just as well.

I'm giving this book four stars because it contains most of the things needed to learn Tagalog. Yet as always it is advised you use multiple resources to learn a language. Later on I shall buy a Tagalog Dictionary to cross reference what I have learned. The previous negative reviews turned me off a bit from this title however I brought it quite some time ago (February 2012). The audio is there indeed. You need to pause and listen. I suppose it's a bit like Pimsleur. I may purchase Elementary Tagalog (by the same publishing company) depending on if it's more in depth with vocabulary and I feel there's more still left to learn.

After reading this iconic work, I felt as if I had been ripped off with only myself to blame. I should have known better. The book is SOOOOOOO 70's! I'll give it two stars simply because it's really so out-of-date it's almost campy.Okay, early oil paintings depicted the upper classes with their "stuff" and the "stuff" of the upper classes. So? It's pretty elemental to figure out that those painters had to make a living and they painted for those who were able to pay them. Duh. Okay, women were depicted in oil paintings as possessions and, in turn, viewed themselves in the light of the value the possessor placed on them. Deep and enlightening, huh?It gets worse. We get a healthy dose of the "capitalism is bad" philosophy and the hammering that advertising is meant to keep the masses enslaved to capitalism. Nineteen seventies style collectivism is so boring. Of course, Berger offers no alternative other than some passing reference to his vague definition of democracy.Maybe it's just so out-dated, it's no longer relevant. Maybe it played better to the 1970's. Maybe we've heard this claptrap for so many years, it's no longer novel or meaningful. And, maybe, it's because we've matured enough to realize criticism without any offering of alternatives is simply disingenuous and superficial.

Great Book, but the copy i was sent was all in black and white. The first printing paperback had mostly color images. Its MUCH better with color images...

The book is incredible, hence my five star rating. I’d like to warn you that this print of the book however, is terrible. Lets start with this lazy cover, which is literally just the first page printed on front, text and all. I know that’s a superficial complaint but to me these things matter. The more important issue is the spine of the book. The pages start ripping out when you hold it open and after staying in my car for a couple of hours, the glue started to loosen and the pages fell out! I’ve never had this issue with another book. Another bad note is that it’s in black and white, making it difficult to see the art that it uses as examples in this book.Overall i highly highly reccomend this book but please buy another print.

I enjoyed it only cause I found it more clear then the documentary. The ideas here are interesting and has stuck with me over the years. I recommend this to artist in any field. just cause it really changes your perspective on things after reading it. I kinda found the chapters to be a bit long and I wish there was more images. But it was a great read.

Excellent. The chapter on "publicity" (advertising) is particularly good. Wonderful critique of the way capitalism debases art, culture, and the human person.

Overall the book is OK. It could use a rewrite to bring it into the 21st century, it is now 46 years sine publication. Many of the photos and concepts could be refreshed. We look at things differently in 2019 vs 1972, and I can remember 1972. It may be that the TV series was better, I’m going to see if it is on YouTube.

It was much smaller than I expected. It was in black n white and small old type set. Perhaps I misread mis-saw it when I ordered it.

I had been on the lookout for a good book on visual culture, and after a long search , I decided to buy this one, as it is a classic. A classic in the non-fiction genre means that latest books on the subject have stolen the main themes from the classic text-which may be very short-and then added verbosity and lots of pictures to make thick and expensive books.This book may seem like a small book full of pictures, but it propounds big ideas. For me it was a quick read, I finished it in a few hours, possibly more so due to the fact that the main ideas were thoughts already scattered in my head; Berger compiled them, stated them way more eloquently, and then some.As is often the case, this book took me back to Qur'anic verses, as it seemed to be tied to the main themes of the Islamic scripture. The section on the female nude, could very well have been a summary of a dissertation on the veil in Islam. A detailed discussion is beyond the scope of this review.Having just read Chomsky's "How the world works," it was quite intriguing to read Berger making the same connections of capitalism with envy, covetousness and social apathy. Just like Chomsky, his identification of capitalism as a roadblock to democracy was also equally intriguing. It was almost the same points being stated, except that this time the thesis was based on marketing and the visual arts. (less)

About the Author

The son of a country doctor, Harry Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. His childhood and early youth were spent in the Midwest, and later he attended Yale University, where he was editor of the literary magazine. After graduating in 1907, he worked as a reporter and in editorial positions at various newspapers, magazines, and publishing houses from the East Coast to California. He was able to give this work up after a few of his stories had appeared in magazines and his first novel, Our Mr. Wrenn (1914), had been published. Main Street (1920) was his first really successful novel, and his reputation was secured by the publication of Babbitt (1922). Lewis was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Arrowsmith (1925) but refused to accept the honor, saying the prize was meant to go to a novel that celebrated the wholesomeness of American life, something his books did not do. He did accept, however, when in 1930 he became the first American writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. During the last part of his life, he spent a great deal of time in Europe and continued to write both novels and plays. In 1950, after completing his last novel, World So Wide (1951), he intended to take an extended tour but became ill and was forced to settle in Rome, where he spent some months working on his poems before dying. Michael Meyer, PhD, a professor of English at the University of Connecticut, previously taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the College of William and Mary. His scholarly articles have appeared in such periodicals as American Literature, Studies in the American Renaissance, and Virginia Quarterly Review. An internationally recognized authority on Henry David Thoreau, he is a former president of the Thoreau Society and the coauthor of The New Thoreau Handbook, a standard reference. His first book, Several More Lives to Live: Thoreau’s Political Reputation in America, was awarded the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize by the American Studies Association. What’s wrong with me? I majored in political science in college and grad school. I studied for a PhD, worked in state & local government & taught “American Government” for decades at various colleges in the Baltimore-Washington area. And, I did not read It Can't Happen Here [ICHH] until 2016. Finally, in the storm of the 2016 election, I read this book. Shame on me.This is a classic fictional novel by American Sinclair Lewis. Published during the rise of fascism [1935], it describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a politician who defeats FDR to become US President. Windrip foments fear and promises drastic reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and "traditional" values. [“America First.”]Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, similar to Hitler’s SS. The novel's plot centers on journalist Doremus Jessup's opposition to the new regime and his subsequent struggle against it. [The Press vs. President]Some have emphasized a connection with Louisiana politician Huey Long, who was preparing to run for president in the 1936 election when he was assassinated in 1935 just prior to the novel's publication. Over the years, ICHH has been compared to FDR’s internment camps, Nixon’s Watergate affair, and even the 2016 Donald Trump campaign. Following the 2016 US presidential election, sales of ICHH surged significantly as it made various bestseller lists. And now that #45 is 100+ days into his term, it still resonates loudly. President Windrip outlaws dissent, puts political enemies in concentration camps, and trains and arms a paramilitary force called the Minute Men, who carry out his wishes. One of his first acts is to eliminate the influence of the United States Congress. In addition, his administration curtails women's and minority rights, and eliminates individual states by subdividing the country into administrative sectors. Early in the story, Doremus states: “”Yes, I agree it’s a serious time. With all the discontent there is in the country to wash him into office, Sen. Windrip has got an excellent chance to be elected President…. And, if he is, probably his gang of buzzards will get us into some war, just to grease their insane vanity and show the world we’re the huskiest nation going.” Is this 1935 or 2017 – fiction or fact; “alternative facts” or today’s headlines?PLEASE read or re-read this classic. You can decide for yourself whether it is prescient or relevant or just another political novel. It will not be a waste of your time.

Since it was written in a time when the English was somewhat different in America, the reader must adjustto the way Lewis wrote the book. However, old-timey sayings aside, this is an incredible piece of fiction.It Can't Happen Here parallels what an American regime, like that of Adolph Hitler's in Germany wouldbe like as it unfolded. The main character is a small town newspaper editor, who enjoys his life and theway things have gone in his town and state, for much of his life. Doremus Jessup, the main character, iseven able to convince himself to stay out of the way of an administration that becomes more and moreauthoritative and dictatorial. Unfortunately, things develop rapidly around the country and the regime'sbad deeds end up in Doremus' town and he's no longer able to ignore it.The ease at which this turns from a cozy and sleepy small town to outright war on any critical voice isquite drastic. There is tension and unease sprinkled here and there, but the reality hits Doremus andwhen it does, he starts to act in any way he can. The country is virtually a loss and men like Doremus,who just wanted to enjoy what they had accomplished in life and not become overly political, becamethe ones that begin the resistance. I'll say no more, so nothing is given away.I read this book over two days time and could not put it down. This is quite simply one of the most remarkableand prescient books I have read in years. I highly recommend this as a Political Science expert and policyanalyst. Thanks to my view of the world, this book was both chilling and thought provoking.

Many people seem to buy 1984 because of the recent manipulation of language / see alternative facts but I find Sinclair Lewis' book much more frightening. I read it many yeaars ago and have just given my copy to one of my children, but I want to read it again. Not that I expect it to give me any pleasure / it is truly disturbing and frightening. That's why everybody should read it.

Excellent and timely read. Though set during the Depression, Lewis paints a picture that is prescient and important for what we are living through today. Sinclair Lewis won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930 and he is one of my favorite authors. All of his writing is empassioned and clear eyed, and he is reminicent of Dickens in his greatness. This, like Arrowsmith, Babbitt, Dodsworth, Elmer Gantry, and especially Main Street remain excellent and important inspirations for us even now!

It's almost like this book was read by Donald Trump (Or, let's be honest, it was read to him) and he thought that President Windrip was supposed to be the good guy. It's scary how much this fits Trump's statements - from whining about fake news to discussing ending any news that isn't pro-Trump to claiming to represent forgotten people to consorting with very specific elements that could be violent in their support of him. Read this book... It's well worth reading.

This story is as relevant today as it was when first written. Everyone, young and old, should read this at least once. It is thought-provoking and brings to light just how easily most everyday citizens can be slyly manipulated to believe maliciously manufactured lies. A story to never be forgotten.

I read this leading up to the 2016 election. I'm not looking to get into a political argument with anyone, but my motivation in reading this book was to see how a demagogue could take power in the United States. After finishing the book, I would best describe my mood as sullen. The story was good, and Lewis did a nice job of putting me into the moment. I would recommend this book to others.
